A Flock Of Seagulls - Telecommunication

Singing is perhaps one of the longest known form of entertainment in the history of human civilization.
While it's true not everyone is born as a singer, learning to sing is not a difficult process either.
With the growing number of passionate and aspiring singers to fine tune their ability to sing, is the development of musical instruments and of course, Karaoke machines. And let us not forget the number of musical schools that are blooming right now. But, for the purpose of this short article, I will discuss about one particular fun way for you to learn to sing and also what is the stumbling stone that prevent any aspiring singer to reach their full potential.

Singing ability, like any other ability, such as communication skill and also marketing skill is a talent that would develop if we nurture it the right way. And if we diligently train our voice, there's almost nothing that can stop everyone to sing their heart out, and ultimately is to sing like a star.

If you just started to learn to sing,it's important for you to be able to overcome your fear of other's criticism.
People can say whatever they want, but, they can't take away your passion in singing. If you can overcome this fear alone, I can assure you that, almost half the battle is already won. You must get rid of your shyness if you're serious to learn to sing. Just imagine, if one day you're standing with a microphone in your hand in front of the American Idol judges and you're shy to sing, what would happen? Even the singer with the best voice in the whole wide world would be eliminated before the final round is (s)he's shy. Yes, of course (s)he is still entitled for that fifteen minutes of fame, but it's all for the wrong reason. You don't want to end up like that now, do you?

There are several ways you can do to overcome this fear, one of it is, you should join your friends for a weekly Karaoke session. I am a firm believer that we can learn a new ability in shorter amount of time if we're having fun while learning it. It can cut down the learning curve period and also the awkwardness you might face if you end up singing in front of hundreds of audience, perhaps a school singing competition? And in this case, it would be a good thing to have a group of fun loving friends along with for a karaoke session together to sing along with you without putting so much pressure whether you're singing it like an American Idol or not. And what's better, no one is going to criticize you even if you're singing off key!
Well, of course it's not a good idea to beat your friend up if they laugh at you, but of course that's another story.

Chen Chee Kui is passionate about music and he loves to sing. Chee Kui is also interested in helping you to learn to sing. He also blogs regularly about ways to make money online on his blog.

Today's Blog Music - The Hype Machine

latest mp3 blog tracks from all over

You'd be amazed to find out that some of the most complex sounding pieces of music are actually simple to create. Take the piano lesson "Caverns" for example. Here we use just one chord in the left hand to create a harmonic foundation for the right hand improvisation.

The right hand plays both melody and bass notes but the left is just playing one chord. The sound that is created is full and rich! But how can this be? After all, only one chord is used. The secret is in how the chord is played.

We use a simple ostinato pattern to create the backdrop. Now this backdrop is the key to the whole piece. It quietly goes on in the background while the right hand is busy playing melody. Bass notes are also called into play with the right hand crossing over the left. Back and forth the right hand goes and we end up with 2 minutes of music using just one chord!

This is an excellent example of the power of limits. We know what the chord will be - in this case D minor. We know that we will be playing melody notes from the D Dorian mode. Now we can relax and enjoy the act of making music. With the decisions of what to play out of the way, it makes the act of creating all that easier.

The E-MU ESI2000 sampler

The ESI2000 sampler is E-MU's cheapest sampler (858), they have achieved this by cutting down on some features such as the built in Zip drive and DSP that featured in the now discontinued ESI4000. The missing features become available by fitting the Turbo Option (259), more about that later.

The Operating System

The E-MU operating system takes a little getting used to. To create a sample you hit the Sample Management Key which then prompts you to select a sub-module; if you know where you are going you can hit the appropriate numerical key for instance 5 will take you straight to the sample set-up page. If you dont know where you are going, then merely rotating the data wheel will list the options possible. This method of modules and sub-modules continues throughout the whole operating system, so once you have the concept grasped it becomes second nature. Indeed most functions are no more than a couple of button pushes away.

Sampling and Sample Editing

To sample, select your source (e.g. analogue), set the level, arm the sampler and then play it into the ESI. There is a VU meter displayed when you set the level, but there is no such display when sampling is in progress. This brings up the usual E-MU v. Akai sampler debate. Akai have always had good graphical displays of samples an idea which E-MU have never really embraced. To be honest though, by the time you know this sampler well enough to make your killer hit, it wont be a problem.

You can now define the start and end of the sample, loop it, reverse it, change the gain or create fades, cut portions out of a sample and paste it wherever you like. There is a pitch shift option where you can move your samples pitch without changing its length, which of course means that you can in theory vary the samples length without changing the pitch, this is one sure way to make interesting breakbeats.

Extra Weirdness

Some functions in a module called Digital Processing II are unique (as far as I know) to E-MU samplers. The strangest of these is Transform Multiply: as the manual says, t his function merges two sounds together in a unique way which can create many strange and beautiful sonic textures. Frequencies common to the original sounds are accentuated while uncommon frequencies are discarded. Not knowing what to expect, I made a sample of myself saying transform, another saying multiply, and then put them into the transform multiplier. At this point the ESI told me that it would take 90mins to complete and did I want to continue? I continued....the result was a sort of woof raahh sound of an underwater dog plenty of room for experiment here methinks!

There is also a Doppler/Pan function that moves a sound from front to back and side to side in a 2-D space, which actually works very well. The Sonic Enhancer adds brilliance and "cut" to a sample making it stand out in a mix; this is useful when you have a wicked sample that just seems to get lost in the mix.

Presets

A Preset is a collection of one or more samples that you have mapped to areas of the keyboard and assigned to a MIDI channel. Here you can define how the sound will change depending on how it is played. The ESI is very well specified here, for instance giving you no less than nineteen different kinds of filters. You can do all the stuff you would expect here, such as feeding some of the envelope signals into the filter to create dynamic wah type effects. I dont know if I am just asking too much but I couldnt seem to make them scream like some old Akai machines I know.

There is an LFO, which can be used to create sweeps, flanging and phasing. Unfortunately those are about all the effects you will find in this sampler. It has no delay, reverb or other DSP type effects; for this you will need to upgrade to the ESI Turbo option (see Expansion below).

Loading and storing samples

The sampler comes with a SCSI interface (the older Centronics style SCSI-1 socket) so you can connect a SCSI Zip Drive or something similar to it.

The sampler comes with two CDROMs of sounds, but these are in E-MU format so the only way you can use these is if you have a SCSI CDROM drive. Maybe bog standard audio CD would have been better!

Its worth noting that although you can import Akai sound libraries, this is only over SCSI and not floppies. Hmmm!

The Manual

The sampler comes with a 28-page printed handbook, containing seven Guided Tours. It is a cut down version of the full CDROM manual which contains another ten sections (plus an up-to-date version of Guided Tours), which go into great detail. These manuals are written in PDF, so to read them you will need a PC or a Mac with Adobe Acrobat Reader software. This is becoming an increasingly popular way to publish information but personally I find it immensely irritating. Someone whose only computer is an Atari or even a Workstation or a Groove Box would find it even more annoying! A hard copy manual makes good bedtime reading a CDROM doesnt!

Expansion

The standard machine comes with 4Mb of RAM and a 1.44Mb floppy drive to store your samples. Although this will get you started, it will only be a matter of weeks before you are fed up with having to load up to three floppies per song. The memory can be expanded to a huge 128Mb with standard SIMMS, which are now cheap and cheerful. If you expand the memory to anything like this amount, a SCSI hard drive will be your only serious option for storage even in these days of cheap IDE drives - SCSI hard drives are still expensive.

The ESI Turbo option adds two 24-bit stereo digital effects processors with over 70 effect algorithms; S/PDIF digital I/O for interfacing with other digital equipment; and two additional pairs of sub-mix outputs which allow external processing of specific sounds. This makes the ESI2000 into a very well specified sampler.

Pros

  • Memory expandable cheaply and up to 128Mb
  • Can be expanded later to give more outputs and effects and digital I/O
  • SCSI interface as standard
  • Comprehensive editing of raw samples
  • Excellent price making it attractive to beginners
Cons
  • Full manual only on CDROM
  • No Reverb
  • Will not read Akai floppies
  • Filters not raucous enough for the more hardcore
  • No graphical editing of samples or envelopes
  • Only has a floppy drive as standard I would have liked a built in Zip drive at least

The advent of the iPod is truly a technological breakthrough. People of all ages are literally dashing to the stores every time a new version comes out in the market. And even if you are not one of those people, and are just planning to buy an iPod, you could easily do so online.

iPods and iPod accessories are readily available in numerous online stores. And anyone looking into buying one has the ability to look into the specifications of the versions and models, as well as their prices online. This makes it a lot easier on consumers to be able to know that they would be getting exactly what they want and need. There are even some retailers who offer freebies with your iPod purchase.

iPod models today would include the iPod Video, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle and a lot more. Accessories like speakers, earphones and cases could also be found and purchased online.

As you browse for the iPod that would be best for you online, you would need to remember a couple of things. If you will be using it or if you would be buying it for someone else, consider how it would be used. You would also take into account the durability, accessories and most of all, functionality. Make sure that you will not just be buying the iPod because of its color or design. Although, the style and design would be one of the important factors to consider, it certainly is not the most essential.

How to buy iPods online? While it is important to buy from popular online retailers, you can save lot of money if you look for some good deals, bargains and discount coupons at the dell coupons blog. You can buy ipods for cheap, printers, hardware, mobiles, ipods and software by using printable coupons and save money in the process as well

America's favorite show American Idol has finished and the outcome has been decided - and we knew David would triumph - we just weren't sure which one. In the end it was by a sizable margin, some 12 million votes, or 56 percent of the vote, and David Cook was crowned winner of American Idol season 2008. The season finale was watched by 32 million viewers.

It is now part of Idol folklore that Cook wasn't even going to try out for the show. It was his brother and an American Idol producer that talked him into going through with the audition. He grew up outside Kansas City, MO, and works as a barman, playing gigs around Tulsa, Okla. He has the experience of a small-show rock performer, and over the course of the series showed his versatility and style with a number of excellent renditions of well known rock/pop songs from artists as diverse as Michael Jackson ("Billie jean"), Collective Soul ("The World I Know") and Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing".

It doesn't take long for new "home-grown" stars to start to sell product. His first release-proper "The Night of My Life" debuted on the Billboard Top 100 at number 3 and number 1 on the digital download list. Other songs he has sung throughout the show also show up in the Hot Digital Tracks chart, including his version of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Dream Big". It is an amazing digital world we live in where songs that have not even been officially recorded or released can show up on the national charts.

Digital sales actually went crazy after the completion of the finale. Undercover.com reports that 1.5 million digital sales were generated following the finale of American Idol. And that wasn't just for the American Idol stable of performers. David Cook sold 942,000 downloads, with second place getter David Archuletta selling 323,000 downloads. Guests on the final show also benefited from the exposure, with George Michael selling 83,000 tracks last week. Carrie Underwood sold 64,000 units, while ZZ Top's 'Sharp Dressed Man' was downloaded 14,000 times. Collective Soul's 'The World I Know' had a 1000% increase, selling 23,000 sales. OneRepublic's 'Apologize' sold 40,000 units. It did 6000 the previous week.

And what about the other David? Coming runner up in American idol is hardly a sentence to anonymity and a quick resumption of one's former life. Seventeen year-old piano balladeer David Archuleta had a number of excellent performances in the final few shows of the series. Many tipped him as the eventual winner. The judges certainly thought he had the goods. But the voting public preferred the more confident Cook. Archuleta will join his top 12 colleagues for the 54 date tour across the nation through the summer. A seasoned performer will emerge, and it is a sure thing that we haven't heard the end of David Archuleta.

The American Idol Live concert tour kicks off on July 1 in Glendale, AZ. Tickets are available from http://www.concert-ticketdeals.com

Don't miss the excitement of the 2008 American Idol series as it comes to a city near you. Tickets are still available to most shows. M. Paul is a music fan and runs the ticket selling service http://www.concert-ticketdeals.com

Lesson 07 Bass Scale Charts

After you learn chord charts it will be a lot easier for you to understand scale charts, however it is not essential that you know how to read a chord chart to learn to use scale charts. The main difference is that a scale chart has more notes per string and the notes on the chart are not played all at once like a chord.

Scales

The easiest scale to play would be the chromatic scale. Some consider the chromatic scale more of an exercise than a real scale but it is important to know because it contains all the possible notes of the guitar. The next scales you will learn are the major and minor scales. Both the major and minor scales have 8 notes in them before they start to repeat the pattern. Another great thing about scales on the guitar is that all the scale types have the same pattern. That means once you know one major scale you know all 12, or once you know one minor scale you know all 12.

Scale Charts

Scale charts are very similar looking to chord charts. At the top there is the name of the scale, such as A Major or B Minor. Below that there is the same grid as a chord chart. This grid represents the neck of the guitar. Vertical lines show the strings from left to right, E, A, D, G, B, e. The horizontal lines show the frets of the guitar with the top line being closest to the nut of the guitar. The black dots show what notes are in the scale. Like a chord chart the black dots show where to put your fingers. But since most people don't have 8 or 16 finger you have to play one note at a time starting with the root note or the note on the E string (far left line) on top of the other note of that string. This is the lowest tone of the scale.

The root note of the scale is the note that is used to name the scale. If the scale starts on an A note and follows the major scale pattern after that then it is the A major scale. The root note can also be used to show where the scale pattern repeats if more than one octave is being played. The root note on a scale chart is usually shown by an outlined circle or a circle with an R in the middle. Think of the root note as the starting note of the scale.

After you learn the major and minor scale patterns you can play any of the 12 scales of that scale type. Just take the major scale, say C major, and move each note up one fret, now you have the Db major scale. You can do this with all of the scale on the guitar, but be careful when you get to playing the open strings near the nut of the guitar, make sure you are playing the correct scale pattern because they can change when you start adding in open strings.

Avoiding Corporate Spread - At-Work Workout Tips

Its inevitable: Youve just finished penning your New Years resolutions in the front of your new Day Planner when you find yourself sitting at your desk again with a feeling of emptiness that seems a little like holiday-cheer withdrawl. Pump up your motivation and get the creative juices flowing by turning your workspace into a mini-retreat with these tips for staying active in the office.

Step one: the warm up

Every good workout begins with a series of gentle exercises to wake up your muscles. An easy way to increase circulation and kick your alertness to a whole new level is to start your day on the right foot (or the left one for that matter) -- take the stairs.

Get a natural energy boost first thing in the morning without caffeine. Whether youre climbing the whole way to your desk or just taking the steps for the first three flights, hoofing it increases blood flow to your brain. Feeling fatigued after just a few floors? Lean slightly forward and balance your weight on the balls of your feet for added endurance.

Step two: the stretch

Keep the energy flowing by lengthening your muscles while theyre still warm. Sit up nice and straight in your office chair, sucking your in your stomach for stability. Depending on how strong your abs are, you can rest your hands on your desk or hold onto the sides of your chair.

One at a time, raise each leg straight out in front of you under your desk, alternately flexing and pointing your feet while you inhale for eight seconds and exhale for eight seconds. Before lowering your leg, turn in and then out from the hip twice each.

Do the same for your arms by raising each one out to the side, flexing your wrist, and turning forward and back at the shoulder. Then, roll your shoulders, alternating forward and backward, to release any tension in your neck.

Step three: the muscle groups

You can tone your calves, butt, abs and arms without leaving your cubicle or even standing up. When you cant concentrate because you feel fidgety or when you find yourself falling asleep, a few crunches and curls will be just the ticket to get you back on task. Keeping these motions small will intensify the exercises and keep your coworkers in the dark about what youre doing.

Kick off your shoes and lower your chair until your knees are comfortably bent at a right angle. Then scoot forward in your seat until your kneecaps are over your toes. Work your calf muscles by bouncing on the balls of your feet until you feel tired. As before, you can keep your hands on your desk or hold onto the side of your chair depending on how your core muscles feel. Put a phone book or dictionary on your lap or rest your hands on your thighs for increased resistance.

While your chair is low and your feet are bare, give your tush a little attention. Scoot a little closer to the edge of your chair and start to stand up, resting your forearms on the desk as though youre just leaning to look at something more closely. As soon as your butt leaves the seat, pause and hold the position. Squeeze your muscles three times and sit back down. Repeat until you feel tired.

Give your legs a little break and stretch your glutes while you work your abs and dissolve that little tummy bulge. Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor, knees together and directly over your heels. Remain seated while you use your stomach muscles to lift your knees straight up and hold the position while you inhale for eight seconds and exhale for eight seconds. Do it as many times as you can.

Finally, break the monotony of typing and mousing with some standard arm curls to shape your biceps and triceps. Havent figured out how to fit hand weights in your oh-so-tiny Kate Spade? Your desks tape dispenser is just right for a few low-weight, high-rep sets.

Step four: cardio

Those stairs that helped you start your day are going to be your best friend when it comes to burning off nervous energy (and unwanted calories!) before a presentation or meeting. Instead of turning to coffee, tea or soda, which will stain your teeth and fill you up with caffeine and empty calories, when your energy level is flagging, take a quick walk or jog up and back down three flights of stairs. The more nervous or tired you are, the more stairs youll want to climb.

Go through this series any time you start to feel sluggish. If you start to fight habitual cravings for empty calories from sugary drinks and low-nutrition snacks when youre tired by substituting some kind of physical activity at the office, the cravings will disappear and youll find energy you never knew you had.

Music Business Delusions Of Grandure

The scenario

If I could get a nickel for every "first ever surround album" created or "first ever dolby digital" or whatever you want to call it hype, I'd be filfy rich. And yes, Jean Michel Jarre comes to mind.

It's not that I don't like surround, I'm an aficionado of it, and I've been doing it since the early nineties from my electronic classes: implementing basic matricial encoding hardware in the nostalgic ProLogic days.

Memories of simplicity

I remember the "wow" factor in my friends facial expression, when I had a stereo TV, and just added the extra surround channel by playing with wiring and an extra speaker. It was all so natural and easy to me.

I never had this "urge" to shout out "hey look, surround".

My dad is also a "quadraphonic" age (sadly a concept that failed in the 60's) curious audiophile, so it was natural to me to do it, audio "surrounding", without to much of a hype, except the experience one.

The near bursting bubble disguised whatever

What's with this recent hype among young musicians that want to be audio engineers than want to be masters that want to be marketeers, performers, managers, that want their works everywhere as if top notch mega-garbage of bits at mega-infinity of Hertz with google amount of audio channels?

They forget two things... business and people.

If these youngsters want to do art, then they should stick to art without being ridiculous, otherwise,a management MBA is in order, and also polishing up those socializing skills!

The real deal

Hang on to your pants, or something, for here is a lesson in life I've learned the hard way which I'll try to keep it simplistic:

The internet is a global village of increasingly lonely people locked at home... Paradox? No, it reveals fears, which stops mankind from moving on and, most important in this post context:

If people ever hire you (yes, you know who you are - plural) to play somewhere - now grab on harder to your seat belt - they DON'T care AT ALL for how good you are, they could not care LESS of how good of a musician you might be and more even, they are as much excited about surround as they are about getting old! Shocked?

The secret, or perhaps not

The naked truth, the only thing these "kids" should know is this: THESE INDUSTRY PEOPLE ONLY CARE IF YOU FILL THE ROOM (suggestion: drag your poor friends along).

It does not matter AT ALL if they think your sound is awful or if you destroy guitars on stage, or sing as well as a door-bell out of order.

If you fill the room (in figure of speech, I could also say "If you please a lot of people" - ergo - improve business), record will companies go after you, and bar owners, and the likes, because they smell money, not talent (I hope you get where I'm getting at: the business beyond the art - the show-BUSINESS), for its not, absolutely not, the other way around.

Now upsize this mathematically to bigger commercial scenario "guerrilla warfare" marketing theaters, and you get an idea on how HARD easy can be.

This world is upside down. Internet is power being misused by most, and many, with talent. It's not what you can do that counts, but what you do that can help others DO too.

Nostalgia and hard sweat

I've had so many trips to the library when I was a kid, hungry for knowledge, I feel nostalgic about smells and textures.

Kids these days, with nearly all at their finger tips, are increasingly lazy... the work does is not done unless someone does it, and that seems forgotten. With an "abracadabra" or scripts you find on the net and easy music making programs you may be mislead to think you can turn into an Elton John overnight, but that ain't so. Work is, as it always was, hard, and it never, ever, appears complete as if fallen of the sky. Sweat is a non-negotiable condition for success.

Sad, or not, but true.

You must work, and worst, you have to be the best at it, because "good" simply won't cut it.

The fantasy never land of the far far away kingdom

In this "lonely" fantasy kind of way of existence, an internet provided virtua-megalomanicac one, musicians want to make money - real money - on their own.

Sadly, they'll stick to the "want" to much time, not the "do", leaving all not finished waiting for some A&R to find their talent and throw loads of cash to them.

That will never happen.

Or if "doing", as in, one music and wait, these musicians will still stick to the "broke" status because they're not doing what it takes: it takes doing, done, done it again and keep on doing it!

The longer it takes them to figure that out - that's it's wasted "effort" and time on a virtual thing that does not exist - apparent success - the longer they will dream about how rich they will be, enduring the temporary never ending dire straits (what happened to them, by the way?), which, by the way, will probably never end indeed.

And that's all for now, wishing best of luck to all... and that all talents surface and get rewarded.

Mind you that, if I talk like I do, it's because I've done the talk, walk, much of it I'm not proud of, but I should be, for it lead me here, where I am, with a lot more knowledge, real one, and much more inspiration and speed at debuting quality, quality, quality work, lots of it - work that does not appear done.

I've been there, done that and got the T-Shirt.

As I said, that got me here, got me better, got things moving faster... got me a lot more, which keeps making me go back to the start of this phrase, exponentially!

Hopefully, it will get you and others to get going too.

How To Produce A Great Drum And Bass Track

From its humble beginnings on the london rave scene in the early 90's, when breaks were innocently looped instead of sequenced, and vocals pitched up instead of timestrecthed, to the present day, it has always been at the cutting edge of electronic musical innovation. Much of the scene's early output was characterised by a total disregard for the conventions, techniques and rules of the day (largely because none of the producers knew what they were), while todays producers are among the most skilled, meticulous and innovative there are. But the common thread is a determination to rinse it, and rinse it in even more ingenious ways.As the production bar in drum 'n' bass has been rased on an almost seasonal basis, it's taken the learning curve with it. Even producers who don't like the genre will often sit and marvel at the complexity and density of modern DnB productions. Also drum 'n' bass has a distinct sound, and it places emphasis on different areas of the mix to other genres, so that even producers in other types of electronic music can struggle to achieve that DnB vibe.

20 MUST KNOW DRUM 'n' BASS TIPS

1- Layering chopped up break beats (DRUM LOOPS) is a good way to get that authentic DnB sound. For a tight, modern sound, put each hits end point before the next drum sound occurs: simply leaving the end point at the end of the sample makes it easier to program junglistic beats, but you'll either have to tune or time stretch it to make sure it plays at the correct tempo.

2- One of the main advantages of using really tightly chopped beats is that you can easily pitch bend your drum part up and down without it ever going out of time. This technique can be used to create stunning percussive effects. For the best results try combining this method withother forms of processing such as filtering or degrading effects.

3- If your track's switch lacks bite, try using a different break beat or rythm pattern to keep the crowd on their toes, processing such as pitch shifting or flanging can do miracles here.

4-When using heavy compression on your rythm track for that fat break beat sound, you may find that your beat gets overpowered when a big kick drum sound is triggered. Consider putting any such sound on a seperate channel with its own compression. If your kick drum needs enhancing, try beefing it up with a layered TR-909 kick drum sample, but resist the urge to turn it up too loud, make sure the sub bass and beat still have enough room to breath.

5-By using a variety of layered re-programmed breakbeats, you can quickly build up a complex rythm track. The trick is to make it sound like one cohesive part that develops and builds, rather than several different parts all fighting for space. The golden rule is to accurately program your drums in the first place, although additional EQing of flabby kick drums, cymbals and hihats may help reign in errant beats.

6- For those liquid funk moments, a housey organ bass always sounds great. You can make your own using sine, pulse or triangle waves low-pass filtered until you get just a few harmonics poking through. Try detuning one oscillator up seven semitones for a handy fifth that will bring back some old school memories.

7- These days it seems everyone is rockin the saw wave lead. This sound is easy to create - short attack and release envelope, a little chorus or pitch modulation on the saw wave and your there. Things can be made more interesting with a little degrading effect, and a bit of glide can add an interesting twist to your nasty lead noise.

8- For artificial intelligence style warbling synth lines, an LFO tied to the filter cutoff is your best bet. Make sure the LFO's phase is synced to the start of the note and try a variety of rates and phase positions until you come up with a suitable noise. Experiment using different wave shapes, LFO amounts and filter cutoff settings, and try further developing the sound with a little LFO based pulse modulation.

9- When using 'real' instrument samples or presets, it's important that they sit comfortably alongside your more processed sounds. If possible, create reverb and delay send effects so you can place all your sounds in the same virtual space. Along with good playing or sequencing, reverb can disguise synthesized reverb sounds. For an even more pronounced effect, try applying a reverb pre-fader soundscape style effects.

10- Make more sophisticated arpeggiator leads by applying frequency or pulse width modulation envelopes to the sound and varying the decaytime. High-pass work well with this style of sound. When filter sweeping the sound in or out, try automating another synth setting, such as one of the envelopes decay time or filter envelope amount. For a trancey sound, delay is a must, but don't make it too extreme or you may mask any chord changes.

11- Now days, most virtual analogue synths feature a massive amount of wave shapes for you to experiment with. Instead of using a sine wave, try a variety of different wave shapes and low-pass filter them to remove all but the lowest frequencies. This will give you a sub bass with more interest than a standard sine tone, which can be enhanced further with tube amplification and other effects.

12- A proper sub bass is all important when creating DnB tracks. In order to create the desired wall of sound effect, the bassline has to hit the low end of the frequency spectrum. The easiest way to create a sub bass is to use a sine wave with a very short attack time and quick release. Try using this sound to double the lead part, thereby adding beef, but remember to watch the levels, as you can have too much of a good thing.

13- Another classic DnB sound is that of the 'Reece' bassline, as used in Renegade Feat Ray keith's Terrorist. While it's unlikely you'll get in trouble for sampling this much loved tone, you can create your own version by layering up detuned square waves with a touch of low pass filtering. This can then be resampled and further processed to create your own fearsome basslines.

14- Another good way to keep the energy levels up on a switch is to introduce a kick drum roll underneath the main beat.

15- To create the familiar wah-bass effect you'll need a synth with a an oscillator set to a wave shape with at least a few harmonics (ie, not a sine or triange), filtered with a low pass filter. An LFO or, alternatively, a short attack and decay envelope, can control the cutoff of the filter. When using an envelope, the note must be retriggered quickly to create the undulating bass riff.

16- Variation can be added to wah-bass riffs by modulating the LFO speed or envelope amount via key-following, eg, the higher the note played on the keyboard, the quicker the LFO oscillates or the more envelope is applied to the filter cutoff. Try varying amounts of one or both of these techniques to create progressively more twisted bass flutters.

17- When adding overdrive effects to filters, try out the different distortion types available and experiment with varying amounts of your chosen effect. Using vast amounts of overdrive may sound menacing, but in the context of a track, less is often more. Try starting out with a small amount of distortion and increase the levels slowly until you reach the optimum settings for your sound. The key is experimentation!

18- Another parameter that requires judicious tweaking when creating distorted bass noises is resonance. While it's very tempting to crank everything up to the most ear bending levels, try to stick to subtler settings- the highest db filter won't necessarily sound the best. Experiment with a combination of filter types and resonance settings until you get just enough harshness to offset the, rumbling bass end.

19- If your using an LFO to create your wah-bass, there are a couple of options available to you. Syncing the LFO to the track is a convenient way of getting it to play in time, but you may find the flexibility of the LFO rate control is worth making use of instead. Try any alternative phase and shape settings to create a variety of sounds.

20- Try using your synth or samplers pitch envelope to automatically bend notes downward. Experiment with different attack, decay and level values, and additional LFO pitch modulation, to create some unusual effects. If your instrument is capable of it, try applying different pitch modulation settings to each voice for yet more twisted bass.

Hound Dog Breeds:The Top Ten Dogs In This Group

The Hound Group includes dog breeds with a wonderful sense of smell and/or great athleticism. These breeds were developed to follow game either by sight or by smell. Sighthounds include the fast and streamlined Afghans, Greyhounds and Salukis. Sighthounds need lots of exercise but some breeds like the Borzoi, the Greyhound, the Irish Wolfhound and the Saluki can adapt to being left alone during the day if they get lots of exercise before and after work. Scent hounds include the slower Bloodhounds, Bassets and Beagles. The dogs in this group have a great size variation and range from the tiny Miniature Dachshund to the extremely tall Irish Wolfhound. The top ten most popular hound dogs in the US are the following. The number in brackets is the rank of the breed out of 154 breeds registered by the American Kennel Club in 2005.

1. Beagle

The very popular (#5) Beagle is one of the oldest hound dog breeds. The small-sized Beagle is calm, loyal and excellent with children and other dogs. The breed is cheerful and happy and they make good family pets except for the nose. Once a Beagle picks up a scent it will follow it to the exclusion of everything else. Beagles are fairly difficult to obedience train because of their independent or stubborn streak.

2. Dachshund

Dachshunds are small dog breeds with a long body, short crooked legs and large floppy ears. The very popular (#6) Dachshund comes in two sizes Miniature and Standard and three varieties of coat Shorthaired, Longhaired and Wirehaired. Dachshunds or Doxies are playful, fun-loving and inquisitive. Doxies are fine with older children but do not like the rough handling they may receive from a toddler. Dachshunds can be independent and stubborn and are difficult to housebreak and train.

3. Basset Hound

The medium- to large-sized Basset Hound is a short legged, loose skinned and powerfully built dog with a great sense of smell. Bassets are one of the easiest-going and best-natured of all dog breeds. The popular (#27) Basset is very gentle, friendly and trustworthy. These hounds adore their masters and children and get along well with other animals and strangers. Bassets can be stubborn, especially when they are investigating an intriguing smell.

4. Bloodhound

The very large and powerful Bloodhound is known for its keen sense of smell which is the most acute of all dog breeds. The Bloodhound is a kind, gentle and loveable dog. The breed is fairly popular (#50) and is gentle and affectionate with his family and children. The Bloody should be supervised around small children and pets as he can be possessive of his food and toys. Bloodhounds are prodigious droolers.

5. Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a lean, well muscled and magnificent, large dog breed. The Ridgeback gets its name from a characteristic ridge running down its back, where the stiff hair grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. The Ridgeback is fairly popular (#54) and is dignified, trustworthy, loyal, intelligent and makes a great family pet. It is extremely protective of its immediate family and wary of strangers and other animals. Ridgebacks are good with children if raised with them but young Ridgebacks can be too rambunctious for small children and toddlers

6. Whippet

The Whippet (#61) is a medium-sized sight hound that looks very much like a small Greyhound. The Whippet gets along well with children and makes a good family dog. This breed is good natured, gentle and very playful. As well this dog can be easily trained, sheds very little and is a great size for an apartment. Although it is important to know that Whippets do like and even expect to sit on furniture - so that should not be a concern if you are considering this breed.

7. Basenji

The Basenji (#81) is an unusual small, elegant and athletic dog that trots like a horse and keeps itself clean by fastidious licking like a cat. Basenjis dont bark but make other unusual sounds like a yodel, howl or chortle depending on its mood. The Basenji is high spirited, affectionate, demanding and almost cat-like in its cleanliness, lack of bark, grace of movement and inexhaustible curiosity. This breed needs an experienced owner and lots of walks and playtime to prevent it from getting into trouble.

8. Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound (#87) is the largest sighthound and one of the biggest and strongest of all giant dog breeds. This breed makes a wonderful family dog as it is reliable, patient, sweet-tempered, intelligent and good with older children. The Wolfhound adores its family and is not aggressive towards strangers or family pets. Toddlers must be supervised carefully around young Wolfhounds as they are in danger of being accidentally knocked over. Fully-grown Wolfhounds can be left alone during the day as long as they get some moderate exercise before and after work.

9. Borzoi

The Borzoi (#94) or Russian Wolfhound is a tall, lean and aristocratic looking large- to very large-sized dog that belongs to the group of sight hound dog breeds. Borzois are kind, gentle and well-behaved indoors. This breed likes lots of attention and loves to recline on a soft bed, a lap or even a couch. Borzois enjoy the company of other sighthounds but the breed is not good with small pets and young children unless raised with them. Borzois dont need an excessive amount of exercise and should not be let off leash because they still retain a high prey drive.

10. Afghan Hound

The large Afghan Hound (#95) has a dignified and somewhat aloof disposition but is also very loyal and affectionate dog. Afghan puppies and adolescents require a lot of knowledge and patience to train and need firm and gentle handling. This breed can be difficult to housebreak and train so professional training may be advisable. The Afghan needs a lot of exercise but still retains a high prey drive and will run off if you let it off leash. The Afghan is suspicious of strangers but can adapt to older children if raised with the family. However the Afghan should be watched around small children as this dog can have a bad temper in adolescence.

How Owning A Great Dane Is Effected By It's Personality

There are some breeds that are instantly recognizable. The Great Dane is one of those: its powerful, yet never clumsy, form makes it the target of much admiration. Of course, it's more than the Dane's robust build that makes it so easy to spot; it's the natural bearing that it carries. This dog has been called the "Apollo" of all breeds, and with good reason.

Its origins date back to 3,000 BC, where drawings found on Egyptian monuments depict Dane-like dogs. And then, in 2,000 BC, Babylonian artifacts were discovered, some including drawings on soldiers using the dogs. The term "Apollo", however, reflects the Greek use of the animals. Coins dating back to 36 BC have been found, inscribed with the Dane's image. It is commonly believed the Great Dane was used in arena blood sports, due to its size and power.

Throughout history, this massive dog was breed for battle and the hunt. Today, we would find that strange since the Dane is considered one of the gentlest breeds, but it was not always so. In 407 AD, an Asiatic race called the Alans invaded parts of Italy, Spain and Germany, using these dogs in battle. During the 15th and 16th century, they were use to hunt boar, bear and other large prey.

It is during this time that the breed seen today was started. In Germany, the Dane was admired for its abilities and selective breeding began. Crossing its larger frame (from Tibetan Mastiff decent) with the more slender build of an Irish Wolfhound, the Great Dane of today was formed.

The name "Dane" came from French Naturalist Comte de Buffon. In the 1700's, he traveled to Denmark, found a breed similar, but more slender, and called it a 'Grand Danois', Great Danish Dog.

After that, the name stuck.

The Great Dane is known, today, not for its battle skills, but for its temperament. Its large head and powerful frame could deceive anyone into believing this dog to be a modern monster. This is not true, however. The Great Dane is a gentle giant, a protective, but never aggressive, animal. Recognized for their loyalty and calm natures, this is a breed ideal for families. The Dane is devoted to his "clan" and takes well to training. Also, he is a patient fellow, perfect for children. However, standing between 28 to 34 inches and weighing between 100 to 200 pounds, the Dane is still intimidating to ward off any problems. If he senses danger toward his family, he will become protective.

At a glance, the Great Dane seems to be the perfect pet, and he may be... for some. Before choosing to own a Great Dane, you must understand the disadvantages. While that powerful frame may make an excellent protector, it will also take up massive amounts of space. And, since the Dane--affectionate thing that he is--needs to be with you, simply locking him outside is not going to work. Another aspect of the breed that you must realize is the need for exercise. This is a dog that, if not given sufficient play, will suffer bloat or other medical complications. They need, at least, a long walk during the day. More is recommended. Many families do not have the time to spend exercising their pet. Or, the extra money to feed it. While this breed is usually slimmer, dogs still eat between three and six cups of food a day. Some families may not be able to afford that, along with just the basic expenses that come with having a larger dog. And the greatest disadvantage to owning a Great Dane--or any larger breed--is that they don't live as long. The typical life span is eight to ten years.

Before purchasing any breed, you must be certain that it is more than just the one you want: it's the one you can handle. Never select a puppy because it's "cute" or because a friend owns one and swears by it. Each family has different needs and some breeds won't fulfill them.

Owning a Great Dane can be a wonderful experience, if you have the time to devote to it. Consider this before bringing one of these gentle giants into your home.
